Tilly enjoying the snow!

Well the winter months have really got a grip on us with deep snow, ice, wind and rain all to contend with and indeed as I write this we have had a real covering of snow on 17th March – madness!! Very difficult to work in and also to keep spirits and enthusiasm at top levels. Thank goodness for the horsewalker which has been used enormously. We have had to limit turnout to when the fields are dry enough – fortunately because we are on the top of a hill the ground dries fairly quickly but even our ground has been waterlogged and I don't want to ruin the paddocks for the spring and summer.

Heather and Consult Ramiro - 2nd in the Novice Freestyle to Music at Patchetts

Heather and Curtis have battled through the elements through to the regional dressage finals at Addington and Patchetts. They fully intended to have a couple of competitions before these dates but due to the snow these were not able to take place so they went to Addington to do their Elementary Regionals without their usual preparation and did a really decent test and scored a very commendable 66.88% and were awarded a wild card to the Winter Finals at Hartpury in April. Nice to know that all things considered they both performed really well but still had plenty to improve on. I was delighted with the result! At Patchetts a couple of weeks later they did their Novice Freestyle to Music Regional qualifier and were 2nd with 73.7% in spite of a blip from the rider of a memory error! We had to rehash the programme to fit to the music the day before and had run through it a few times but poor Heather forgot the last movement in canter on the day – still an amazing mark in spite of this and once this is sorted hopefully they stand a really good chance in the finals! We are off to Swallowfield to nail this practice session! All this as well as fitting in lessons with Ferdi as well – Curtis is a busy boy!

Westerdale Regal Max owned by Ian Darcy

Holly and Westerdale Regal Max thoroughly enjoyed their few months together as a partnership and we were really sad to say goodbye to him at the end of January. We have just heard that he has qualified for the Small Riding horses at the Royal International two weeks ago with his owner Carly Darcy and I know he is also contesting the RIHS Intermediates with Mel McClusky so we wish them all the luck. He was a pleasure to deal with and was a lovely character to have on the yard and Holly enjoyed schooling and competing him throughout the winter.

Whalton Showstopper (Jacko) has continued to make great improvements and has become a lovely balanced ride. He has gone back to Jacky Thompsons for a couple of months well deserved break and then will come back to me to be prepared for sale. He is a real superstar horse and one that I will be sad to lose on the yard but I know that he had a great showing future ahead of him and someone will be very lucky to ride and compete him. He is a big friendly character on the yard and very easy to deal with.

Daldorn Lara’s Theme has recently arrived back on the yard to be produced for the season. Out of the champion HOYS hack Daldorn State Melody by Caprimond a Grand Prix Trackhener stallion – she is a very elegant moving mare. We took her to Katie Jerrams clinic after only two and half weeks back with us at the end of February and she really manned up to her task and behaved very well so we will aim her at a few Novice classes this year and see how she progresses and possibly do a few qualifiers with her as well.

D’Astaire (Fred) is now all clipped out and is now back in full work and will be aimed at some of the April shows onwards. I will probably take him out initially and then Averil will take him on after that. She has recently moved house up to Yorkshire and is very busy sorting out that together with her new job.

Thriller (Harry) is also being aimed at the early shows with Fiona Lintott his owner. She took him on the Katie Jerram clinic which was a great help for her as she could see what he was like in a class situation and what he was like away from home. A very useful exercise and Katie was extremely helpful in her advice.

Gossip Girl - 15.2hh by Primitive Fairy Tale for sale

We have had a new arrival in Gossip Girl (Coco) belonging to Averil who is a four year old 15.2 competition horse. The most beautiful mover and was very easy to break in – she is now being prepared for sale. She is by Primitive Fairy Tale (Primitive Rising x Ben Fairie) out of Averils small hunter show horse. This lovely mare will excel in any sphere and would make the most fabulous young persons horse.

We also took Fair and Square to this clinic as well as taking him for a couple of lessons with Rhett Bird to get him out and about as well. He too is being aimed at the early shows.

RIP Dave

The saddest piece of news I have ever had to write about personally is the death of Dave Slatter - Dave was a massive influence in my life for many years – he was the kindest most generous person you could wish to meet, (annoyingly cheerful first thing in the morning !!!). He has left the most enormous void in mine and Holly’s lives and will be so missed. God has indeed gained a very special angel in Dave – no other words...

Lets hope for some warmer weather to give us a spring in our step.
