Everything has taken a slightly different angle since Horse of the Year Show. All the show horses that went there have been roughed off for their well deserved winter break. Daisy has gone back to her owner Teresa Waters where she will do some dressage over the winter. We took her to the CHAPS mare grading where she was award Star grading which means she scored in excess of 70%. Teresa can now apply for Elite status based on her show performance - what a clever clogs!

Me and Holly in Cornwall

Straight after Horse of the Year Show Holly and I went on a weeks holiday down to our beloved Polzeath down in Cornwall where we were joined by quite a few friends including the Gilsenen family, David Slatter, our farrier James Hiatt and his eventing friend Sarah Stretton to name a few. The weather was truly excellent for the time of year and we managed to fit in some excellent surfing and waterskiing interspersed with lots of socialising! Our two dogs loved it down there playing on the beach and it was a lovely break.

  1. Lined up for the surf
  2. Skye and Tilly playing on the beach
  3. Holly waterskiing
  4. Jo waterskiing
  5. James, Sarah and Holly off crab fishing!

Unfortunately during this time one of my very best friends Hannah Wain had a freak fatal riding accident whilst out hacking. I know that I can speak for many but for me personally she was a truly loyal friend with an infectious bubbly personality who will leave a big void in my life. I used to love teaching her - she was a very receptive pupil and I was very proud of her many successes on her horses. Hannah I raise many glasses to you up there and our memories together will always have a special place in my heart. Her funeral was a lovely celebration of her life and David (Tatlow) and "Spuddy" gave lovely tributes to her. Sandra, Ian Sally and Ollie (Hannah's family) my heart goes out to you all.

After our holiday, I went up to Lady Benton Jones - one of my very loyal owners to fetch a 3 year old large hack out of my ex HOYS champion hack Daldorn State Melody. He has come to me for a months education. He has proved to be a very eager and receptive pupil - he loves his work and has an excellent sweet temperament. He was very easy to break in and is enjoying his new life. He will go back home to reflect on his work and then hopefully he will come back in the middle of next year to campaign the latter part of the show season - a very exciting prospect for Lady Margaret and myself!

I have also been breaking in a 3 year old traditional coloured pony stallion for Denise Bumford known to his friends as Kenny Rogers. He also has a really nice temperament and after only a few days we were trotting and cantering round the school. He will be a great project over the winter and I know Denise is looking forward to getting to grips with him as soon as!!

Sandrose Silk has continued to make good progress and we took her and Zac (Zorpari) to the Eilbergs for a lesson with Michael. Holly thoroughly enjoyed her lessons with him and really learnt a lot. She has had fantastic training with Rhett Bird but it is always good to hear another trainers perspective on things. It was also a good opportunity for Michael and Geri to assess both horses as they are both for sale. Following on from this, we have all decided that Sassy will make a fantastic Junior Dressage horse - she is working well at Advanced Medium and has lovely changes and lateral work. Zac has a great work ethic and has really strengthened up from his time off. Due to my financial constraints Holly and I have had to make the tough decision to sell him. Unfortunately I cannot afford to keep three of my own horses so Bridgit and him are now on the open market.

Abergwuan Amendment - for sale

I have also taken delivery of a lovely attractive 16hh black, 9 year old gelding for Fleur Cradock to sell called Abergwuan Amendment. He has evented, done dressage and show jumping and would make a fantastic teenagers horse. He has a sweet temperament - After only two days on the yard he has started to settle in nicely and I am really enjoying schooling him. See Abergwuan Amendment here.

Cambridge our lovely three year old dressage horse is having a well deserved couple of months off - he has grown so much since he joined us and as he is quite advanced in his training it seemed very sensible to give him a break before he starts his career in earnest with Holly next year.

Brungrange Toby at the Heritage Championships

Toby is continuing to progress well with his jumping - he is really starting to click with it all - We took him to the Heritage Championships where he did the Novice Worker and had a couple down which was down to a little greenness - so since then we have been practicing doubles and practicing more shortening and lengthening of the canter so as to make it as adjustable as possible - we are improving! He has also been hunting which he absolutely loves. At the Heritage Championships he also competed in the Blue Riband Championship where he finished 2nd in his section gaining the highest performance mark on the second day which Ginny and I were very proud of.

I have also been busy teaching and one of my pupils 7 year old Megan Thompson has competed her new 12.2 show pony Twylands Jewel for the first time at BSPS Area 6 winter show. I think they will be a very exciting combination to watch out for. Megan is going to be a really good little jockey - she is very receptive to teaching and works very hard - I am very proud of her progress in such a short space of time.

Unfortunately winter is looming very quickly up with those freezing cold days and nights, driving rain and wind - need I say anymore - bring on the summer!!!!
